From dockpicks (https://dockpicks.com/), a hand-picked, independent directory of Mac apps. Web page: https://dockpicks.com/text-expanders/

Group: Work. 5 apps, listed best first. Prices are the vendor's wording, checked October 2026, and can change.

Built into macOS: Text Replacements. macOS has Text Replacements in System Settings > Keyboard, which swaps one phrase for another and syncs to your other Apple devices through iCloud. It is fine for a handful of plain snippets, but Apple notes it is not available in every app. Dedicated expanders add fill-in fields, dates, images and scripts, and if you already use Raycast its built-in snippets may be enough.

## 1. TextExpander

Popular snippet tool with fill-ins and team sharing

- Price: Free; Pro $6/month or $60/year
- Pricing model: Free tier. A usable free version, with a paid upgrade for more.
- Usable without paying: Yes
- Open source: No
- Developer: TextExpander, Inc.
- Website: https://textexpander.com/
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/text-expanders/#textexpander

Expands abbreviations into saved text as you type, with fill-in fields and search. Snippets work across Mac, Windows, Chrome, iPhone and iPad, and teams can share a common library.

Our take: The best choice for teams that need shared, centrally managed snippets across platforms. For a single person on one Mac, a one-time purchase app or Espanso is cheaper over time.

## 2. Espanso

Free, open-source expander configured with text files

- Price: Free
- Pricing model: Free. No payment needed for the full app.
- Usable without paying: Yes
- Open source: Yes, GPL-3.0 (https://github.com/espanso/espanso)
- Website: https://espanso.org/
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/text-expanders/#espanso

A cross-platform text expander that replaces keywords as you type, with forms, date insertion, shell scripts and a searchable snippet list. Configuration lives in plain files, and community packages are available on Espanso Hub.

Our take: Ideal for developers and anyone comfortable editing config files, and it works the same on Mac, Windows and Linux. There is no full settings app yet, so it is not the friendliest pick for non-technical users.

## 3. Typinator

Long-standing Mac expander with a one-time purchase option

- Price: $59.99 one-time; Advanced $39.99/year
- Pricing model: Paid. A one-time purchase. A free trial may exist.
- Usable without paying: No
- Open source: No
- Developer: ergonis
- Website: https://www.ergonis.com/typinator/
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/text-expanders/#typinator

Turns short abbreviations into text, images, dates, formulas and code in any app, and can fix typos as you type. Snippets are stored locally with optional sync through iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive or WebDAV.

Our take: A good fit if you want a polished, Mac-native expander without a mandatory subscription. The one-time Basic license covers only the current major version, Mac only and private use; iOS and work use need a subscription.

## 4. Rocket Typist

Simple expander with a free tier and one-time Pro upgrade

- Price: Free; Pro $19.99 one-time
- Pricing model: Free tier. A usable free version, with a paid upgrade for more.
- Usable without paying: Yes
- Open source: No
- Developer: Witt Software
- Website: https://www.witt-software.com/rockettypist
- Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/rocket-typist/id6463636684
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/text-expanders/#rocket-typist

Inserts saved text and image snippets when you type an abbreviation, with macros for dates, placeholders and clipboard content. Snippets sync across Mac, iPhone and iPad through iCloud.

Our take: A tidy, low-cost option for personal use with no subscription. The free tier is limited to 10 snippets, and formatted text and images need Pro. It can import TextExpander and TypeIt4Me snippets.

## 5. TypeIt4Me

Veteran Mac text expander, one-time purchase

- Price: $19.99 on the Mac App Store
- Pricing model: Paid. A one-time purchase. A free trial may exist.
- Usable without paying: No
- Open source: No
- Developer: Ettore Software
- Website: https://ettoresoftware.com/mac-apps/typeit4me
- Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/typeit4me-7/id6474688391
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/text-expanders/#typeit4me

Expands abbreviations into snippets as you type, with date and time calculations, fill-in templates, a search window and a menu for inserting snippets. Version 7 is a rewrite in Swift.

Our take: A straightforward, no-subscription expander for individuals who just want reliable snippets on a Mac. The vendor page does not mention sync or team features, so look elsewhere if you need those.
