# Screenshots and screen recording for Mac

> Capture, annotate and record your screen beyond Cmd-Shift-5.

From dockpicks (https://dockpicks.com/), a hand-picked, independent directory of Mac apps. Web page: https://dockpicks.com/screenshots/

Group: Create. 6 apps, listed best first. Prices are the vendor's wording, checked October 2026, and can change.

Built into macOS: Screenshot app. Press Shift-Command-5 and macOS opens its Screenshot app, which captures the whole screen, a window or a selection, records video with a timer and microphone, and lets you mark up the thumbnail afterward. Recent versions added window recording (macOS Tahoe 26) and system audio capture (macOS 27). What it lacks is scrolling capture, text recognition in the capture tool, rich annotation, cloud sharing links and polished demo-style recordings, which is what the apps below add.

## 1. CleanShot X

All-in-one screenshot, recording and annotation tool

- Price: $35 one-time (1 year of updates)
- Pricing model: Paid. A one-time purchase. A free trial may exist.

Captures screenshots, scrolling pages and screen recordings (MP4 or GIF, with webcam, clicks, keystrokes and audio), with annotation, redaction, on-device text recognition, pinned captures and optional cloud share links.

Our take: The most complete replacement for the built-in tool and a fair price for a one-time license. Also included in a Setapp subscription.

## 2. Shottr

Fast, lightweight screenshots with OCR, ruler and color picker

- Price: Free; Basic $12 one-time, Friends Club $30 one-time
- Pricing model: Free tier. A usable free version, with a paid upgrade for more.

- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/screenshots/#shottr

A small screenshot and annotation app with scrolling capture, text and QR code recognition, a pixel ruler, a color picker, pinned screenshots and S3 upload.

Our take: The best free option and very quick; developers and designers like the ruler and color picker. A paid license is required for commercial use. Screenshots only, no video recording.

## 3. Snagit

Long-standing capture tool for documentation and training

- Price: €39.56 per user per year
- Pricing model: Subscription. A recurring payment for real use.
- Usable without paying: No

- Developer: TechSmith Corporation
- Website: https://www.techsmith.com/snagit/
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/screenshots/#snagit

Captures images, scrolling pages and screen video with microphone, system audio and webcam, with callouts, smart redaction, themes and one-click sharing to TechSmith's Screencast.

Our take: Suited to people who write how-to guides or training material, or who need the same tool on Windows. Now a subscription, which is a lot for casual use.

## 4. Xnapper

Makes screenshots presentable with backgrounds and auto-redaction

- Price: $29.99 one-time (1 Mac)
- Pricing model: Paid. A one-time purchase. A free trial may exist.
- Usable without paying: No
- Open source: No
- Developer: Devuap LLC
- Website: https://xnapper.com/
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/screenshots/#xnapper

Takes a screenshot and automatically balances it on a styled background, with one-click redaction of emails, card numbers and API keys, text copying and social media size presets.

Our take: For people who share screenshots on social media, in docs or in slides and want them to look good without opening a design tool. Free to try with a watermark.

## 5. Screen Studio

Screen recordings with automatic zoom and smooth cursor

- Price: $29/month, or $9/month billed yearly
- Pricing model: Subscription. A recurring payment for real use.
- Usable without paying: No
- Open source: No
- Developer: Adam Pietrasiak
- Website: https://screen.studio/
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/screenshots/#screen-studio

A Mac screen recorder that zooms in on where you click, smooths cursor movement and lets you restyle the cursor after recording. Exports MP4 up to 4K 60 fps, GIFs, share links and transcripts.

Our take: The quickest way to make polished product demos and tutorials without video editing skills. Expensive if you only record occasionally.

## 6. OBS Studio

Free, open-source recording and live streaming studio

- Price: Free
- Pricing model: Free. No payment needed for the full app.
- Usable without paying: Yes
- Open source: Yes, GPL-2.0 (https://github.com/obsproject/obs-studio)
- Website: https://obsproject.com/
- Facts checked: 2026-10-24
- On dockpicks: https://dockpicks.com/screenshots/#obs-studio

Records and live-streams scenes built from screen and window captures, webcams, images, text and browser sources, with transitions and a studio preview mode.

Our take: The free choice for streaming, long recordings or mixing several sources into one video. Overkill and fiddly if you only need a quick clip.
